Episode 64: Walking Together: Land-Based Wisdom for Urgent Change

The penultimate episode of Circle of Change gives you perspectives and ways of being to navigate and resolve the urgent issues in our world today, from climate change to the mental health crisis.  Through their stories, Joan Brown and Scott Saywell guide us toward what is to come and show us what is possible when we do the work required to bridge Indigenous and non-Indigenous worldviews and walk together.

What’s in this episode for you:

  • An inspiring story of two people with different upbringings coming together for a greater purpose

  • The reasons why turning toward the land is the solution we are seeking

  • What is required of you to walk in two worlds and change systems

  • How to stay true to yourself as you carve out new paths forward

  • A clear description of the work that is urgent right now

Who’s in circle with us:

Joan Brown is a lifelong administrator and current Chief Administrative Officer of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. In my words, she is also a storyteller, a knowledge keeper, and a community leader whose voice is creating waves of change in the circles in which she sits.

Scott Saywell is the Superintendent of Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools. He holds a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University, and a Bachelor of Education and Science from Mount Allison University. In his 32 years of service in education, he has focused his attention on improving life chances for the most unique, disadvantaged, and vulnerable learners. Joan and Scott share many words of wisdom on how to be the change from two different world views.  Here are some questions they leave us with for you to explore:

  • How can you use your emotional, physical and spiritual bodies to understand your life experiences - not just your intellect?

  • What are you focusing your energy on - what is important or what is urgent?  How can you make small shifts toward that which is most urgent?

  • What are you learning about yourself and your ancestry?

  • What are you reading that opens and expands your worldview?

  • What are your natural surroundings telling you about life and how to love?

  • In what ways have you changed over the last few years?

  • Who are the people you are surrounded by and do they create space to hear your story?

Find what resonates for you in this moment, get curious and let the exploration begin to shift how you see and show up in the world.
